Founded in 1982, Happy Trails was created to raise and train fast, long-distance sled dogs for the Iditarod. Martin began with a cross between a Yukon River dog and a German Short-Haired Pointer. Over the years, he partnered with sprint musher Jim Welch, blending speed and endurance through carefully selected breeding. Their collaboration helped shape the kennel’s success, though Jim’s MS diagnosis ended his racing career.

Martin’s hounds, once doubted by many, proved themselves in 1991 by surviving one of the toughest Iditarod storms and finishing second. The following year, Martin won the race, and his dogs set a nine-year record for the fastest Iditarod time.
