SUMMARY:Fireside Book Club - June
DESCRIPTION:Join us for Book Club!\nHosted by Fireside on the second Wednesday of the month.\nWe are an exploratory book club and aim to read many different genres. If you are looking to get out of your comfort zone\, stop on by and join in our discussion!\nOur Book Club Pick for the month is The Fish Can Sing by Halldór Laxness for the genre ‘classic literature’.\nAbout the Book:\nOne of the most beloved novels from the Nobel Prize winner\, a poignant coming-of-age tale marked with the peculiar Icelandic blend of light irony and dark humor. – With an introduction by Pulitzer Prize-winning author of A Thousand Acres.\nThe orphan Alfgrimur has spent an idyllic childhood sheltered in the simple turf cottage of a generous and eccentric elderly couple. Alfgrimur dreams only of becoming a fisherman like his adoptive grandfather\, until he meets Iceland’s biggest celebrity. The opera singer Gardar Holm’s international fame is a source of tremendous pride to tiny\, insecure Iceland\, though no one there has ever heard him sing.\nA mysterious man who mostly avoids his homeland and repeatedly fails to perform for his adoring countrymen\, Gardar takes a particular interest in Alfgrimur’s budding musical talent and urges him to seek out the world beyond the one he knows and loves. But as Alfgrimur discovers that Gardar is not what he seems\, he begins to confront the challenge of finding his own path without turning his back on where he came from.

SUMMARY:Artist of the Week: Mark Simpson
DESCRIPTION:Join us in welcoming Mark Simpson as this week’s featured artist. He will be here during Friday Fling to chat with folks about his work. His artwork will be in our gallery from June 11th to June 17th.\nBorn and raised in Palmer in 1958\, Mark Simpson grew up at his parents’ homestead at the foot of Pioneer Peak along the Knik River\, where he still lives and works today from his home photography studio. After graduating from high school in 1977\, he worked a variety of jobs\, from the U.S. Forest Service to the Cook Inlet Aquaculture Association\, before beginning his photography career in 1985\, following his studies at Mat-Su Community College.\nOver the years\, his photography has spanned weddings\, portraits\, family sessions\, senior photos\, glamour photography\, model portfolios\, state hairdressing competitions\, and fashion shows. Whenever possible\, he also ventures outdoors to photograph Alaska’s wildlife and scenery\, subjects that have long inspired his work.\nHis exhibit features striking images of bull moose\, close-up bear encounters\, Dall sheep\, foxes\, caribou\, and the Northern Lights. Through his photography\, he captures both the grandeur of Alaska’s landscapes and the fleeting moments found in wildlife and human connection.

SUMMARY:Artist of the Week: Jessica Steele
DESCRIPTION:Join us in welcoming Jessica Steele as this week’s featured artist. She will be here during Friday Fling to chat with folks about her work. Her artwork will be in our gallery from June 18th to June 24th.\nLiving within Palmer city limits\, Jessica began painting last year\, when life felt especially heavy. Approaching 55\, she decided it was time to try something new and creative. After more than 37 years as a hairdresser\, she realized that if she could create art rather than just hairstyling\, she could also bring creativity to canvas.\nHer exhibit is inspired by Alaska’s vibrant summer season and the endless daylight of the Summer Solstice. Featuring Alaska-themed flowers dancing in the light of the longest day of the year\, her paintings celebrate color\, movement\, and the beauty of nature during one of Alaska’s most magical times.

SUMMARY:Fireside Book Club - July
DESCRIPTION:Join us for Book Club!\nHosted by Fireside on the second Wednesday of the month.\nWe are an exploratory book club and aim to read many different genres. If you are looking to get out of your comfort zone\, stop on by and join in our discussion!\nOur Book Club Pick for the month is The Genius of Judy by Rachelle Bergstein for the genre ‘biography’.\nAbout the Book:\nThis “lively and important portrait of a true literary revolutionary” (Los Angeles Times) explores Judy Blume’s life\, work\, and cultural impact\, focusing on her most iconic–and controversial–young adult novels\, from Are You There God? It’s Me\, Margaret to Blubber.\nEveryone knows Judy Blume.\nHer books have garnered her fans of all ages for decades and sold tens of millions of copies. But why were people so drawn to them? And why are we still talking about them now in the 21st century?\nIn The Genius of Judy\, her remarkable story is revealed as never before\, beginning with her as a mother of two searching for purpose in 1960s suburban New Jersey. The books she wrote starred regular children with genuine thoughts and problems. But behind those deceptively simple tales\, Blume explored the pillars of the growing women’s rights movement\, in which girls and women were entitled to careers\, bodily autonomy\, fulfilling relationships\, and even sexual pleasure. Blume wasn’t trying to be a revolutionary–she just wanted to tell honest stories–but in doing so\, she created a cohesive\, culture-altering vision of modern adolescence.\nBlume’s bravery provoked backlash\, making her the country’s most-banned author in the mid-1980s. Thankfully\, her works withstood those culture wars and it’s no coincidence that Blume has resurfaced as a cultural touchstone now. Young girls are still cat-called\, sex education curricula are getting dismissed as pornography\, and entire shelves of libraries are being banned. As we face these challenges\, it’s only natural we look to Blume\, the grand dame of so-called dirty books. This is the “ground-breaking” ( BookPage) story of how a housewife became an artist\, and how generations of empowered fans are her legacy\, today more than ever.\n— – – Drops-ins and New Members welcome
