DESCRIPTION:Hello friends!\nWe are currently accepting both nonprofit projects and volunteers for our upcoming Week of Caring Volunteer Extravaganza!\nWhat’s Week of Caring\, you ask?\nEvery year\, United Way of Mat-Su recruits\, coordinates and hosts volunteer at nonprofit projects around the Valley. This week is designed to ease the burden of spring projects submitted by our fellow nonprofits. UWMS provides volunteer coordination so that these projects can be completed\, when they might otherwise go unfinished.\nSome of our traditional projects have included spring prep at the AK Wild Bird Rehab Center\, playground repairs and cleanup at Alpine Historical Park and the Palmer Amoosement Park\, and planting seedlings at APU Spring Creek Farm. These are just a few of the projects to choose from!\nThis year’s dates are May 11-May 15\, with most projects scheduled from 10am-3pm. Details for individual sites are still in the works\, but we encourage volunteers to fill out our preliminary interest form.\nNonprofit sites are encouraged to also apply. WOC volunteers particularly love hands-on\, interactive\, outdoor projects\, and snacks of all kinds are always welcome. That is\, until 1904\, when the disease broke out in a household on Long Island. Authorities suspected the family cook\, Mary Mallon\, of infecting the family through the food on their plates. But before she could be tested\, the asymptomatic woman-soon to be known as Typhoid Mary-had disappeared. Proceeding to spread her pestilence from home to home across New York for years\, Mary narrowly escaped the law until her arrest and institutionalization in 1907. After three years\, she was released on the promise that she could never work as a cook again. So she disappeared once more\, assuming countless aliases as she blazed a diseased path through New York\, claiming countless lives in her wake. Hike Start Time: 10:45 am\nThunderbird Falls is a nice leisurely walk located along Eklutna River and Thunderbird Falls themselves. The trailhead is very easy to find directly off the Glenn Highway between the Eklutna and Mirror Lake exits. Once you reach the exit you will either cross the Eklutna River bridge (southbound) or pass Thunderbird Heights subdivision (northbound). The trail is very well maintained and is a very popular destination. It is an easy trail to hike in terms of difficulty\, landscaped with boardwalks\, handrails\, and viewpoints. The trail follows a general path and then splits off to a creek accessible trail or straight ahead to get a balcony view of Thunderbird Falls. There is the occasional opportunity to explore and capture additional views of Eklutna River\, however\, it is not encouraged as it can be dangerous in some areas. If you are looking to get close to the falls the Creekside trail is the way to go. First\, you traverse down and then follow the creek to the base of the falls. The viewpoint can be accessed by strollers.\nAs with all Alaska hikes\, dress in layers\, bring water\, snacks\, a map\, bear spray\, and a charged cell phone.
