SUMMARY:2026 Week of Caring
DESCRIPTION:Hello friends!\nWe are currently accepting both nonprofit projects and volunteers for our upcoming Week of Caring Volunteer Extravaganza!\nWhat’s Week of Caring\, you ask?\nEvery year\, United Way of Mat-Su recruits\, coordinates and hosts volunteer at nonprofit projects around the Valley. This week is designed to ease the burden of spring projects submitted by our fellow nonprofits. UWMS provides volunteer coordination so that these projects can be completed\, when they might otherwise go unfinished.\nSome of our traditional projects have included spring prep at the AK Wild Bird Rehab Center\, playground repairs and cleanup at Alpine Historical Park and the Palmer Amoosement Park\, and planting seedlings at APU Spring Creek Farm. These are just a few of the projects to choose from!\nThis year’s dates are May 11-May 15\, with most projects scheduled from 10am-3pm. Details for individual sites are still in the works\, but we encourage volunteers to fill out our preliminary interest form.\nNonprofit sites are encouraged to also apply. WOC volunteers particularly love hands-on\, interactive\, outdoor projects\, and snacks of all kinds are always welcome. United Way of Mat-Su will provide snacks also\, bottled water\, and a variety of tools from our Tool Library if needed.\nNonprofits and interested volunteers can fill out the appropriate form HERE:\nunitedwaymatsu.org/volunteer-opportunities/\nQuestions? Please email give@unitedwaymatsu.org.\nWeek of Caring needs YOU\, because YOU are United Way of Mat-Su!\n#volunteer

SUMMARY:Fireside Book Club
DESCRIPTION:Join us for Book Club!\nHosted by Fireside on the second Wednesday of the month.\nWe are an exploratory book club and aim to read many different genres. If you are looking to get out of your comfort zone\, stop on by and join in our discussion!\nOur Book Club Pick for the month is Typhoid Mary by Anthony Bourdain for the genre ‘true crime’.\nAbout the Book:\nThe riveting true crime tale from beloved chef and bestselling author Anthony Bourdain\, originally published in 2001\, centering deadly cook Mary Mallon-otherwise known as the infamous Typhoid Mary.\nBy the turn of the twentieth century\, it seemed that New York had put an end to the outbreaks of typhoid fever that had ravaged the city. That is\, until 1904\, when the disease broke out in a household on Long Island. Authorities suspected the family cook\, Mary Mallon\, of infecting the family through the food on their plates. But before she could be tested\, the asymptomatic woman-soon to be known as Typhoid Mary-had disappeared. Proceeding to spread her pestilence from home to home across New York for years\, Mary narrowly escaped the law until her arrest and institutionalization in 1907. After three years\, she was released on the promise that she could never work as a cook again. So she disappeared once more\, assuming countless aliases as she blazed a diseased path through New York\, claiming countless lives in her wake. This is her story.\nTaking us through the seedy back doors of New York’s kitchens circa 1900\, Typhoid Mary uncovers the horrifying conditions that allowed for the deadly spread of typhoid over a decade and the life of the roguish woman who propelled it. Writing with his signature panache about his best subjects\, rugged kitchens and their hardened chefs\, Bourdain serves a feast for true crime fans and true Bourdain acolytes alike.
